Kansas: KC Water reopens all lanes of Southwest Trafficway following sinkhole repairs
Rezul News/10744438
~ Kansas City Water Department (KC Water) has successfully reopened all lanes of Southwest Trafficway after extensive repairs were made to a sinkhole that caused emergency closures. The sinkhole was first reported on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at approximately 2 p.m., prompting immediate response from KC Water crews.
Upon arrival, the crews worked diligently to assess the situation and ensure public safety. It was determined that the sinkhole was caused by a sewer line failure from 1892, when Southwest Trafficway was known as Summit Street. Further investigation revealed a 30-inch transmission main from 1932 that also required specialized work for repairs.
The repair process involved around-the-clock efforts to stabilize the area, fix the damaged infrastructure, and restore the roadway. Thanks to the hard work and dedication of the crews, the road was reopened approximately 15 hours ahead of schedule.
