Kansas: KC Water Expands Traffic Closures on Southwest Trafficway Due to Ongoing Cave-In Investigation

KC Water crews continue to investigate the cause of a street cave-in along Southwest Trafficway and will implement additional traffic closures overnight to support excavation work and ensure public safety.

Beginning at 9 p.m. on Thursday, August 27, Streetwise crews will begin establishing traffic control measures and lane closures associated with the next phase of work.

At approximately midnight, KC Water crews will initiate a full closure of all southbound lanes on Southwest Trafficway and one northbound lane between 29th Street and Interstate 35. The northbound lane closure may be adjusted depending on repair progress and on-site safety conditions.

Drivers can expect those lane restrictions to remain in place until approximately 3 a.m.

The roadway will remain closed until crews can safely restore the affected area with appropriate fill and roadway covering materials. KC Water crews time do not have an estimated reopening time.

KC Water is urging the public to avoid the area whenever possible and use alternate routes. Drivers should expect significant delays and follow all posted traffic control devices.

KC Water will continue to provide updates as work progresses and more information becomes available regarding roadway reopening and traffic impacts.
