Columbia: Portions of South Sixth Street, East Stewart Road to close starting May 18 for MU Engineering Innovation Center construction

(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ Columbia, MO - The University of Missouri has announced that portions of South Sixth Street and East Stewart Road will be closed to traffic, parking, and pedestrians starting Monday, May 18. This is to make way for the construction of the university's new Engineering Innovation Center, with the closures expected to last until March 31, 2028.

The closures will be divided into two phases. Phase 1 will begin on May 18 and is expected to last until August 14, 2026. During this phase, South Sixth Street will be closed to through traffic between Elm Street and Conley Avenue. Additionally, East Stewart Road will be closed between South Fifth Street and South Sixth Street. The sidewalk on the east side of South Sixth Street between Elm Street and East Stewart Road will also be closed, along with parking on the west side of South Sixth Street and on the north side of East Stewart Road.

While traffic on Conley Avenue and South Fifth Street will remain open, drivers will not be able to turn into the closed sections of South Sixth Street or East Stewart Road.

Phase 2 closures are set to begin on May 18, 2026 and continue until March 31, 2028. During this phase, long-term closures will remain in place for South Sixth Street between Elm Street and East Stewart Road. The sidewalk on the east side of South Sixth Street and parking on the west side of South Sixth Street will also remain closed. However, segments of the sidewalk near Lafferre Hall will remain open to maintain building access.

The University of Missouri has partnered with Whiting-Turner Contracting Company for this project and they will be responsible for maintaining signage and barricades in the area. Drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians are advised to use caution when traveling near the construction zone and allow for additional travel time.

The closure also has an impact on Go COMO bus service as the Black Route will be detoured around the closure starting May 18. Buses will use Elm Street, South Fifth Street, and Conley Avenue before returning to their regular route. The northbound Black Route bus shelter at South Sixth Street and Noyels Hall will also be closed until March 31, 2028. Riders who usually use this stop are advised to use the bus stop at Tiger Avenue and Conley Avenue instead.
