City of Long Beach to Host Two Sandbag Distribution Events at Long Beach City College to Prepare Residents for Winter
Rezul News/10748526
Long Beach, CA ~ Long Beach is urging residents to prepare for a potentially severe 2026-27 winter season by obtaining sandbags and taking other steps to reduce storm risks. The city's announcement follows three consecutive storms that caused coastal flooding and damage to public and private property.
The city is partnering with Long Beach City College to hold two drive-up sandbag distribution events. The first is scheduled for Oct. 24 at the college's Trades, Technology and Community Learning Campus, 1305 E. Pacific Coast Highway. The second will take place Nov. 7 at the Liberal Arts College, 4901 E. Carson St., in Lot M. Both events will run from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., and city staff will help fill vehicles with up to 10 sandbags.
Mayor Rex Richardson said the events are intended to help residents protect their homes and families by preparing before storms arrive. City Manager Tom Modica said city teams are preparing infrastructure, equipment and personnel for the winter season, and encouraged residents to gather emergency supplies and make household plans.

The city cautioned that sandbags can help limit water intrusion but cannot eliminate flood risk. Residents are advised to obtain and place them before storms arrive and conditions become hazardous.
Empty sandbags are available to Long Beach residents at four neighborhood fire stations. Residents should bring their own shovel or other tools to fill them. The locations are Fire Station 7, 2295 Elm St.; Fire Station 12, 1199 E. Artesia Blvd.; Fire Station 13, 2475 Adriatic Ave.; and Fire Station 14, 5200 E. Eliot St.
The city said winter storm flooding could affect low-lying and flood-prone areas beyond the coast. It recommends clearing gutters and drainage areas, checking roofs for damage, securing loose outdoor items and ensuring water can drain away from homes.
Residents can find storm information at longbeach.gov/emergency and sign up for Alert Long Beach notifications by email, text or phone. The city also recommends planning for possible evacuation and assembling emergency supplies.
