City of Bloomington Seeks Artists for Signature Gateway Public Artwork

Rezul News/10748513
~ Bloomington is seeking qualifications from professional artists and artist teams to create public artwork for the Bicentennial Gateway, a city entrance site that has welcomed people since 2024.

The city's Parks and Recreation and Economic and Sustainable Development departments said the artwork should reflect Bloomington's character, history and creativity, and celebrate the community's vibrancy, diversity and resilience. A portion of the project's Bicentennial Bond funds was set aside for public art when the gateway sign's final design was selected.

The project has a budget of $125,000. Artists and teams based in Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky or Illinois may apply. Qualifications are due Dec. 4, 2026.

The city plans to offer several opportunities for public input during the process. Residents are encouraged to share their perspectives through an online survey during the initial phase.

"Parks are important gathering places and gateways to our community, and this project is an opportunity to create something that welcomes people to Bloomington in a meaningful and memorable way," said Tim Street, director of Bloomington Parks and Recreation.

Mayor Kerry Thomson said residents helped shape the direction of the gateway's first phase, and the city intends to take a similar approach to the public art component.

The full call for qualifications, project information and application are available on the city's Public Art Page.
