Texas: Governor Abbott Declares Purple Heart Day, Named Purple Heart Ambassador

~ At the Texas Capitol today, Governor Greg Abbott stood alongside Purple Heart recipients to commemorate a significant event. The Governor signed a proclamation declaring August 7, 2026, as Purple Heart Day in Texas. This day will serve as a reminder to all Texans of the sacrifices made by our service members.

The Military Order of the Purple Heart presented the Office of the Governor with a Purple Heart Designation, making it the first Governor's Office in the nation to receive such an honor. In addition, Governor Abbott was named a Purple Heart Ambassador. This designation also places the Office of the Governor on the national Purple Heart Trail.

In his speech, Governor Abbott expressed his gratitude for those who have served and continue to serve our country. He stated that the Purple Heart represents the deep appreciation of every American for our service members' selfless sacrifice. The Governor also acknowledged that we owe an immeasurable debt to these heroes for their devotion to duty and their sacrifice for our nation.

During his remarks, Governor Abbott paid tribute to military heroes who have been wounded or killed in combat. He also showed respect for those who have received this distinguished decoration. The Governor highlighted that on August 7, 1782, General George Washington commissioned the first Purple Heart Medal as the Badge of Military Merit, making it the oldest military award in our nation's history.

Governor Abbott emphasized that Texas holds these heroes close to its heart and owes them an immeasurable debt for their dedication and sacrifice. He called on all Texans to honor these men and women and ensure a future worthy of their sacrifice.

The ceremony was attended by several Purple Heart recipients and leaders from the Military Order of the Purple Heart, including Department of Texas Commander Lorenzo Rodriguez, Chapter 1513 Chapter Adjutant Lisa Holmes, Senior Vice Commander Eric Newton, and David Apperson. Other military heroes and Purple Heart recipients from conflicts such as Korea, Vietnam, and the Global War on Terror were also present.

The Governor's Office has promised to provide additional photos of the event when available. This ceremony serves as a reminder to all Texans to honor and remember the sacrifices made by our service members in defense of our nation's freedom.
