Madison: Community Update from Mayor Rhodes-Conway (August 1)

While the Madison Police Department is fully cooperating, they are not in charge of the investigation and do not have the authority to make any arrest decisions or recommendations for charges. This responsibility lies with the Wisconsin Department of Justice and the Dane County District Attorney.

The City remains committed to creating opportunities for dialogue and change within its own jurisdiction. However, it must be acknowledged that occupying this intersection is not a safe or sustainable solution for those experiencing homelessness or the surrounding community. It also does not have any impact on expediting the independent investigation or changing state law. At this point, it is causing more harm than good and is distracting from the necessary dialogue and organizing needed for lasting change. The barricades must be taken down to allow people to access their homes and jobs, and businesses to open.
