Madison: August Moving Days: How to Set Out Appliances, Furniture, & Bags That Won't Fit in the Cart

~ As the student move out season approaches, the City of Madison is reminding residents of the guidelines for setting out large items and extra bags of trash and recyclables. The student move out collections will run from August 3, 2026, until August 21, 2026, within the downtown student move out area.

To ensure a fast and safe collection process for everyone involved, the city has provided specific rules for setting out furniture, appliances, and other large items. Residents are advised to obtain a large item work order if necessary and make sure the item is set out on the designated date. It is also important to keep these items at least 5 feet away from fire hydrants, utility poles, street signs, and other obstructions. Additionally, residents should avoid placing items under low-hanging wires or tree limbs.

The city also urges residents to keep their large item piles tidy and organized. For example, if a desk has been taken apart, the pieces should be stacked neatly. It is also important to separate metal items and appliances from wood items and furniture as this helps with recycling efforts.

For those with extra bags of trash and recyclables that cannot fit into their carts, clear bags should be used for small items. Loose heaps of trash or scattered debris on the ground will not be accepted. Any overflow recyclables must be placed near recycling carts in clear bags so that crews can easily identify their contents.

Residents are reminded to follow recycling rules for what belongs in their cart or bags. They should also avoid stuffing small boxes into one large cardboard box as this can cause issues during collection. Additionally, bagged trash or recyclables should not be placed on top of large items or appliances.

For those who do not live in the designated moving days area but still have extra bags of trash and recycling, there are alternative options available. The city has a household cleanup webpage that provides information on what to do with these items.

By following these guidelines, residents not only create a safe environment for city staff but also help to expedite the collection process. Some items are collected using a truck-mounted crane, which is why it is crucial to avoid placing items under low-hanging wires and branches. This not only ensures the safety of the operators but also saves time by eliminating the need to move items away from overhead obstructions.
