Look for the Label: Governor Newsom visits Central Valley, highlights state's manufacturing might with new Made in California program

Governor Newsom presents advanced-manufacturing business with new Made in California license

What you need to know:  Governor Newsom visited the Central Valley and met with an advanced manufacturing company that recently joined California's new statewide labeling and marketing campaign, Made in California.

VISALIA — Governor Gavin Newsom visited Visalia, California, in the Central Valley to highlight California's new statewide labeling and marketing project, Made in California. The program empowers California-based manufacturers to capitalize on the state's global reputation for quality. While in Visalia, Governor Newsom toured and presented a Made in California license to Voltage Multipliers, a locally owned advanced manufacturing company that makes parts for critical industries worldwide and has operated in the state since the 1980s. Eligible manufacturers like Voltage Multipliers can join the movement now and apply to use the "Made in California" label and additional program resources to strengthen their visibility with consumers, buyers, retailers, investors, economic development partners, and state and federal contractors.

California is where things get made — from semiconductors and robotics to apparel, food, and wine. Our manufacturers compete at a scale and across a range of industries no other state can match. With the new Made in California program, we're giving businesses a new way to show the world what that means: quality, innovation, and products made right here in the Golden State.

"California's economic might and diversity are simply unmatched," said Dee Dee Myers, Senior Advisor to Governor Newsom and Director of the Governor's Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz). "For the next generation of business owners, leaders and entrepreneurs that are deciding where to make their impact, the choice is abundantly clear: the future will be Made in California."

"California manufacturing means jobs for Californians," said Stewart Knox, Secretary of the California Labor & Workforce Development Agency. "Made in California showcases the industries and workers building the Golden State and the nation."

Supporting small and mid-sized manufacturers

California is home to more small businesses than anywhere else in the nation, and small and mid-sized manufacturers, like Voltage Multipliers, stand to gain the most. Small manufacturers account for roughly 89% of the state's manufacturing firms. Already the engines of local jobs, regional supply chains, and community pride, these businesses often lack the marketing infrastructure of larger companies. Made in California closes that gap and helps participating businesses reach new customers, pursue contracts, attract capital, enter export markets, and compete for shelf space by turning the state's reputation for quality, innovation, and sustainability into a true market advantage.

Governor Newsom recently announced $10.4 million for California's advanced manufacturing sector to support ecosystem and workforce development in the Central San Joaquin Valley. These crucial investments will go towards projects such as renovating The Forge at CSU Fresno to house shared testing facilities and supporting the San Joaquin Valley Manufacturing Alliance working to further industry coordination and upskilling K-16 educators.

#1 state for manufacturing jobs: California

Through Made in California, the Golden State is ensuring that its nation-leading industry can continue to dominate the next chapter of American manufacturing.
  • In 2025, California manufacturers produced $391 billion in economic output, accounting for 9% of the state's total GDP.
  • In 2024, California manufacturers exported $159 billion in goods.
  • California's 1.24 million manufacturing workers make more than $25,000 above the average non-farm wage, supporting families across the state.
  • The manufacturing jobs multiplier estimates that each manufacturing job supports three more in neighboring communities.
  • Since 2021, California has invested over $215 million in more than 675 contracts with employers to train more than 194,000 workers in the manufacturing sector.

Made in California gives nation-leading producers a public-facing identity. The program, led by the Governor's Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz) and the California Office of the Small Business Advocate (CalOSBA), is open to eligible manufacturers operating in California whose products are substantially made within the state — from legacy makers and family-owned businesses to high-growth innovators and advanced manufacturing firms.

California's economy is dominating

The Golden State represents only 11.5% of the U.S. population but is responsible for nearly 14% of U.S. GDP, 47% larger than Texas. California continues to lead the nation economically, outpacing all states and every developed nation, according to a Bloomberg analysis.

The state has more businesses than any other state, including Florida and Texas, supporting strong job creation and expanded economic opportunity for workers across the state. California is also home to more than 4.3 million small businesses, representing 99.8 percent of all businesses in the state and employing 7.6 million people.

As the world's fourth-largest economy, California continues to lead the nation where it matters most — creating new businesses, attracting venture capital, driving technological innovation, expanding advanced manufacturing, growing high-tech industries, and producing more than any other state. In fact, the Golden State continues to be the #1 state for:
Governor Newsom recently signed new legislation to continue powering California's economic engine:

✅ Making a major update to California's antitrust and consumer protection laws. Clamping down on anti-competitive behavior, encouraging competition, and expanding opportunities for entrepreneurs and workers — including by creating new authority for the Attorney General and district attorneys to combat monopolistic behavior while also protecting small businesses.

✅Helping retailers open and operate faster by allowing businesses undertaking certain tenant improvements to hire qualified architects or engineers to review and certify that building plans comply with life-safety, health, and building code requirements.

✅ Protecting small businesses from abusive financial practices by unscrupulous financing companies.

✅Ensuring access to small business technical assistance by supporting providers who offer free or low-cost one-on-one, confidential consulting and training. This will help small businesses and entrepreneurs start, grow, expand, and create jobs in California.

✅Cutting unnecessary red tape that has kept a lower-cost fuel option out of reach for California drivers. Removing a regulatory barrier to authorize the sale of E15 — gasoline blended with up to 15% ethanol — in California.
