Rezul News/10748902
ARVADA ~ Colorado Gov. Jared Polis issued an executive order to develop a cybersecurity training pathway for high school students and direct the Colorado National Guard to consider qualifying scores on the AP Cybersecurity Exam when assessing recruits' readiness to serve.

Polis announced the action at Ralston Valley High School in Arvada, which offers the course. He was joined by College Board CEO David Coleman, Colorado National Guard Adjutant General Maj. Gen. Robert Davis and student Emmett Garland.

The order directs state agencies, including the departments of Labor and Employment, Higher Education, and Military and Veterans Affairs, to coordinate with education and workforce partners on a pathway intended to prepare students for cybersecurity careers. The effort will also promote awareness of the field, according to the governor's office.

Polis said the initiative would create career opportunities, strengthen the National Guard and bolster the state's cybersecurity workforce. Davis said the pathway could expand young people's access to hands-on experience and support civil-military partnerships.

The order also directs the National Guard to work toward considering a qualifying AP Cybersecurity Exam score as one factor in evaluating a person's readiness during recruitment. It does not state that passing the exam would guarantee enlistment.

Coleman said the initiative could open pathways to college credit, careers and service. Garland, a Ralston Valley senior, said the course had helped him think critically about technology and online safety.
