Governor Abbott, HHSC Announce $10 Million In Grant Funding To Enhance Pediatric Telemedicine In Rural Texas

Rezul News/10737081
~ In a move to improve healthcare access for children in rural areas, Governor Greg Abbott has announced that the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) will be providing $10 million in grant funding. This funding will be available for eligible rural hospitals and health clinics to offer pediatric telemedicine services.

Governor Abbott expressed his commitment to providing state-of-the-art care for rural communities, stating, "Texas is providing rural communities with the state-of-the-art pediatric care they deserve." He also thanked the HHSC for their efforts in delivering healthcare services to Texans across the state.

The Pediatric Tele-Connectivity Resource Program for Rural Texas will allow hospitals and clinics to virtually consult with pediatricians and specialists from other medical facilities or schools. This will not only improve access to specialized care but also reduce travel time and costs for families caring for sick children.

HHS Executive Commissioner Stephanie Muth emphasized the importance of this funding in improving rural healthcare, saying, "This funding continues the state's commitment to improving rural health care by connecting families to pediatric care closer to home." She also noted that previous grant funding has been used for various purposes such as placing telemedicine carts in elementary schools and connecting emergency room staff with remote physicians.

The grants, which will range from $1 million to $2 million, will be awarded by HHSC until August 31, 2026. The funds can be used for information technology infrastructure and security, as well as services and supplies needed for delivering telemedicine.

Qualified rural hospitals and clinics have until July 13 to apply for these grants. The award decisions will be based on the applicant's submission and supporting documentation as outlined in the Request for Application.

This initiative falls under the Rural Health Stabilization and Innovation Act passed by the 89th Texas Legislature in 2025. Through this act, HHSC aims to strengthen rural healthcare by providing grant funding and administering programs.

For more information on the rural hospital grant and other related programs, interested parties can visit the HHSC Rural Hospital Finance webpage. With this funding, it is hoped that pediatric telemedicine services will become more accessible and efficient for families in rural Texas.
