Governor Abbott Creates Leadership Team To Bring United States Space Academy To Texas

~ In a recent press release, Governor Greg Abbott announced the formation of a leadership team to secure Texas as the permanent home of the United States Space Academy. The team will be led by Representative Greg Bonnen M.D. of Friendswood, who also serves as the Chair of the House Appropriations Committee.

According to Governor Abbott, Texas is the ideal location for the United States Space Academy due to its strong ties to America's human spaceflight program. He stated that no other state can match what Texas has to offer in terms of assets and resources. These include NASA's Johnson Space Center, renowned universities, a thriving commercial space industry, major military installations, and a highly skilled aerospace workforce.

Last month, President Donald J. Trump signed an executive order at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston to establish a Presidential Commission on the United States Space Academy. This commission will recommend a permanent location for the academy. The newly formed leadership team will work closely with the Texas Space Commission to prepare and present Texas' statewide proposal to the federal government.

Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick also expressed his support for Texas as the home of the United States Space Academy, stating that it is at the forefront of space innovation and exploration. He believes that with its rapidly growing private-sector space industry and world-class research institutions, Texas is well-equipped to provide cadets and faculty with an ideal platform for launching America's new space academy.

Speaker Dustin Burrows echoed these sentiments, highlighting Texas' 15 military installations and top research universities as key factors that make it an ideal location for the academy. He expressed confidence in Chairman Bonnen and his team's ability to successfully bring the academy to Texas.

Gwen Griffin, Chair of the Texas Space Commission, also shared her excitement about Governor Abbott's initiative and pledged her support in demonstrating why Texas is the perfect place to train future American space leaders.

The press release also highlighted how Texas already has all the necessary components for a national space academy. NASA's Johnson Space Center is designated as the agency's Human Spaceflight Center of Excellence and is home to the astronaut corps. The state's universities also play a crucial role in training engineers, scientists, and operators for civil, commercial, and military space programs. Additionally, Texas has a strong aerospace workforce and a thriving commercial space industry that is responsible for building, launching, and operating systems that will shape the future of American leadership in space.

Aside from Chairman Bonnen, the proposal leadership team includes Dr. Nancy Currie-Gregg, Director of the Texas A&M Space Institute and retired Army Colonel and former NASA astronaut; Dr. Heather Wilson, President of The University of Texas at El Paso and former Secretary of the United States Air Force; Evan Loomis, member of the Texas Space Commission Board of Directors; Dr. Robert Ambrose, Associate Director of the Texas A&M Space Institute; Jack Fischer, Senior Vice President at Intuitive Machines and retired Air Force Colonel and former NASA astronaut; and Dr. Lori A. Magruder, Director of the University of Texas at Austin Center for Space Research.

With such a strong leadership team in place and overwhelming support from state officials and organizations, it seems likely that Texas will soon become the permanent home of the United States Space Academy.
