~ Colorado Springs Launches Citywide Initiative to Improve Road Safety
The City of Colorado Springs has officially launched "Safe Streets COS," a new initiative aimed at reducing traffic crashes and improving safety for all road users. The initiative was announced at a press conference held at Mann Middle School on Wednesday, where city leaders highlighted new school zone safety improvements and stressed the importance of responsible driving.
Safe Streets COS is a comprehensive approach that combines engineering, enforcement, education, and community partnerships to address dangerous driving behaviors and improve safety along high-risk corridors and around schools throughout the city. Mayor Yemi Mobolade stated that "road safety is public safety" and that Safe Streets COS is a bold commitment to protecting lives as the city continues to grow.
The event at Mann Middle School showcased the recent improvements made near the school to increase driver awareness and encourage slower speeds in the school zone. Speakers emphasized the importance of protecting students, pedestrians, cyclists, and families through a combination of roadway enhancements, targeted enforcement, and public awareness.

Todd Frisbie, City Traffic Engineer, highlighted the significance of focusing on school zones in their safety efforts. He stated that even small reductions in speed can make a significant difference in reducing the severity of crashes involving pedestrians.
The Colorado Springs Police Department is also partnering with the City in this initiative through education and enforcement efforts aimed at improving driver behavior near schools and in areas with elevated crash risks. Lt. Jason Newton emphasized that traffic safety cannot be solved with enforcement alone; it requires all drivers to make responsible choices behind the wheel. He also urged drivers to slow down, pay attention, and remember that their fellow community members are also on the roads.
Representatives from Colorado Springs School District 11 were also present at the event to stress the importance of safe travel routes for students and families.
