Colorado: Governor Polis Signs Bills to Support Victims of Crime, Protect Public Safety, and Lower Cost of Prescription Drugs
Rezul News/10736986
DENVER ~ Denver - In a move to support victims of crime, protect public safety, and save people money on prescription drugs, Governor Jared Polis signed several bills into law today.
The first bill signed was HB26-1009, also known as the Colorado Mandatory Lethality Assessment Act. This bill, sponsored by Majority Leader Monica Duran and Representative Ryan Gonzalez, along with Senators Katie Wallace and Byron Pelton, aims to connect high-risk victims of domestic violence with community-based resources. Governor Polis emphasized the importance of this law in preventing tragic instances of domestic violence. He thanked the sponsors for their unwavering efforts to support victims of domestic violence.
Next, Governor Polis signed HB26-1256, sponsored by Representatives Jamie Jackson and Javier Mabrey, and Senator Lisa Cutter. This bill focuses on procedures and data for individuals being released from the Department of Corrections. The governor stressed the importance of ensuring that those who have served time have access to the resources needed to successfully reenter society. He believes this will not only protect public safety but also prevent recidivism.

In addition to these bills, Governor Polis also signed SB26-167 - Prescription Drug Out-of-Pocket Expense Credit. This bill, sponsored by Senators Adrienne Benavidez and Kyle Mullica, along with Representatives Andrew Boesenecker and Mandy Lindsay, aims to save people money on prescription drugs. The governor acknowledged that prescription drugs can be costly and often force families to make difficult decisions between basic necessities and medication. He believes this new law will help alleviate some financial burden for Coloradans by ensuring that purchases made through direct-to-consumer platforms count towards out-of-pocket maximums or deductibles.
Governor Polis also signed several other bills into law during today's signing ceremony:
- SB26-160 - Personal Protective Equipment & Meatpackers: Sponsored by Majority Leader Robert Rodriguez and Senator Julie Gonzales, along with Majority Leader Monica Duran and Representative Mathew Martinez.
