California: Governor Newsom secures federal assistance to support response to Gann Fire in Calaveras County
Rezul News/10742124
~ Sacramento - Governor Gavin Newsom has taken swift action to support the response efforts to the Gann Fire in Calaveras County. On August 4, 2026, he announced that California has secured a Fire Management Assistance Grant (FMAG) from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to provide additional resources for the suppression of the fire.
The Gann Fire, which started on August 3 near Hogan Dam Road and Gann Road in Valley Springs, has already burned over 6,495 acres and forced the evacuation of 1,473 residents. With an additional 1,400 under evacuation warnings, it is clear that this fire poses a significant threat to several communities in Calaveras County.
Governor Newsom stated that California is fully mobilized alongside local and state partners to combat the Gann Fire. By securing this assistance from FEMA, they are strengthening their ability to deploy critical firefighting resources, accelerate containment efforts, protect lives and property, and support communities facing ongoing evacuations.

The FMAG will be provided on a cost-share basis and will assist local, state, and tribal agencies responding to the fire by reimbursing them for 75% of their eligible fire suppression costs. This grant is crucial in helping these agencies quickly access the resources they need to respond to fast-moving wildfires.
Director of Cal OES Caroline Thomas Jacobs emphasized the importance of this grant in supporting emergency management operations and ensuring that law enforcement has all the necessary resources to keep communities safe. She also reminded Californians to stay vigilant during this heightened heat and fire weather period by signing up for local emergency alerts, preparing a wildfire action plan, and staying informed about changing conditions.
Governor Newsom also took this opportunity to announce appointments within his administration. Luis Garnica has been appointed as Warden of Mule Creek State Prison at the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

In addition to addressing the Gann Fire, Governor Newsom also invited President Trump to deliver overdue wildfire recovery funding during his visit to Los Angeles. As the President raises campaign money at his Palos Verdes golf club, the Governor called on him to finally send the disaster aid he promised 18 months ago.
It is crucial for Californians to stay prepared and ready during this fire season. They are urged to have a wildfire action plan in place, including evacuation routes and a go-bag with essentials. For more information on fire safety and general preparedness, residents can visit Ready.ca.gov.
As CAL FIRE remains fully staffed throughout the state to respond to new incidents, Cal OES continues to maintain sufficient statewide firefighting resources through the California Fire and Rescue Mutual Aid System. With these efforts in place, California is working diligently to protect its communities from the devastating effects of wildfires.
