Rezul News/10748079
~ California Gov. Gavin Newsom proclaimed Oct. 12, 2026, Indigenous Peoples' Day, marking the observance for the eighth consecutive year.

In the proclamation, Newsom honored Indigenous peoples and cultures originating in the lands and waters now known as California, as well as Indigenous people from elsewhere who have contributed to the state. He described California's Indigenous population as one of the largest and most diverse in the world.

The proclamation said Indigenous communities' approaches to stewardship, grounded in connection, reciprocity and sustainability, have helped protect biodiversity and landscapes. It also cited land return, co-management and the restoration of Indigenous sciences as efforts underway in California.

Newsom's statement also referred to the recent felling of the last of four ancestral cottonwood trees, known as "grandmother" or "abuela." The trees hold spiritual and material significance for Indigenous peoples across the Southwest and Mexico, the proclamation said, adding that borders can threaten communities' ties to relatives, lands and lifeways.

The governor said California's strength comes from welcoming newcomers while honoring those who were there first. He reaffirmed a commitment to ensuring Indigenous people who call the state home are included in shaping its future.
