~ Washington D.C. - Governor Gavin Newsom of California continued his advocacy for the recovery of Los Angeles by meeting with members of California's Congressional delegation, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, and other members of Congress in Washington D.C. on May 20, 2026.
The Governor's main focus was on securing supplemental funding for the recovery efforts following the devastating wildfires that occurred in January of this year. In a statement, Governor Newsom emphasized that the cost of rebuilding is the biggest obstacle for survivors and called on President Trump and Congress to step up and support the people of Los Angeles.
During his visit to Capitol Hill, Governor Newsom met with New Jersey Senator Andy Kim, who serves on the Homeland Security Committee overseeing FEMA. They discussed not only LA's recovery but also important issues such as healthcare, foreign policy, and voting rights.
The Governor also held meetings with members of the California Congressional Delegation including Senator Alex Padilla, Senator Adam Schiff, Representative Brad Sherman, Representative Judy Chu, and Representative George Whitesides. He also had additional conversations with other members throughout the afternoon including Georgia Senator Raphael Warnock and Delaware Senator Lisa Blunt Rochester.

This visit builds upon Governor Newsom's efforts from the previous day where he met with U.S. EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin to discuss wildfire recovery efforts and funding in Los Angeles. They also discussed ongoing pollution issues in the Tijuana River between San Diego County and Mexico which is under federal management.
In addition to this meeting, Governor Newsom also met with House Democratic Leader Rep. Hakeem Jeffries and other members of the Congressional Black Caucus to discuss threats to democracy and voting rights.
During Infrastructure Week, which coincided with his visit to Washington D.C., Governor Newsom announced a $540 million investment towards improving infrastructure statewide. This investment will focus on enhancing transportation systems to increase safety and connectivity for all Californians while also addressing aging and damaged infrastructure.
In other news, California has secured federal assistance to support the response to the Bain Fire in Riverside County. Evacuation orders are currently in effect and residents are urged to follow guidance from local officials.
