~ Boston Council Adopts Resolution in Support of Ride Safe Act to Improve Roadway Safety
In response to growing concerns over roadway safety in Boston and other communities, the City Council has taken action by adopting a resolution in support of the Ride Safe Act. The resolution, proposed by Councilors Flynn and Culpepper, references Governor Healey's recent filing of "An Act to enhance the safe use of micromobility devices," a statewide proposal aimed at regulating e-bikes, mopeds, scooters, and other delivery-related vehicles.
The resolution highlights the increasing worries among Boston neighborhoods regarding the unsafe operation of motorized devices. This includes issues such as speeding, riding on sidewalks, disregarding traffic signals, and other dangerous driving behaviors in densely populated areas. The Council emphasizes the need to improve safety for all individuals using the roadways, including pedestrians such as seniors, individuals with disabilities, and families. It also recognizes the importance of ensuring the safety of drivers and delivery workers.

The Ride Safe Act is described as a comprehensive measure that will establish clearer accountability measures, strengthen enforcement and identification requirements, and promote safer operation of micromobility devices. It also outlines specific provisions such as restrictions on higher-speed devices in certain areas, helmet requirements for riders, and age restrictions for licensing, registration, and insurance for different categories of vehicles.
The Council's adopted resolution highlights the urgent need to address public safety concerns related to delivery and micromobility vehicle use. This is particularly important when it comes to pedestrian safety and ensuring compliance with traffic laws. By showing their support for the Ride Safe Act, the Council hopes to improve roadway and pedestrian safety not just in Boston but across Massachusetts as a whole.
