Boston: A Celebration of Resilience, Pride, and Heritage: Council Recognizes Haitian Heritage Month
Rezul News/10735352
~ Boston, MA - Each May, the vibrant cultural legacy of Haiti takes center stage in Boston as the city recognizes Haitian Heritage Month and Haitian Flag Day. This year, the City Council adopted a resolution offered by Councilor Louijeune to officially recognize May as Haitian Heritage Month and May 18 as Haitian Flag Day.
The resolution highlights the rich history, culture, and contributions of Haitian and Haitian-American communities in Boston and around the world. It acknowledges Haiti's significant role as the first free Black republic in the world, founded through a successful slave revolt. It also recognizes Haiti's status as a foundational nation in the Western Hemisphere and its enduring significance as the first independent Black republic.
The resolution also pays tribute to the Haitian flag, which was adopted on May 18, 1803. The flag is seen as a symbol of pride, resilience, and unity for Haitians everywhere. It serves as a reminder of their strength and determination in overcoming adversity.

In addition to celebrating Haiti's history and culture, the resolution also acknowledges the challenges faced by both Haiti and its diaspora. This includes ongoing uncertainty related to Temporary Protected Status for Haitian immigrants. However, it also highlights moments of cultural pride and visibility such as Haiti's national soccer team, Les Grenadiers, and major international sporting milestones connected to Boston.
The City Council encourages all residents to take part in various events throughout the month of May that celebrate Haitian Heritage Month. These include a flag raising ceremony on Friday May 15th at City Hall Plaza, the Haitian Flag Day Parade in Mattapan and Dorchester on Sunday May 17th, and cultural celebrations at Fenway Park and Gillette Stadium.
As part of this recognition, the resolution calls for the Haitian flag to be raised on City Hall Plaza on May 15th in 2026 - marking another milestone for both Haitian Flag Day and Haitian Heritage Month. This serves as a powerful symbol of the city's commitment to honoring and celebrating the rich history and culture of Haiti and its people.
