Use It or Lose It: Scottsdale Dental Arts on Getting the Most From Dental Benefits Before Year-End

Rezul News/10748645
Dr. Jason McCargar answers common questions on calendar-year dental insurance, cost estimates and financing.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - Rezul -- As the year winds down, many patients are asking the same question: what happens to my dental benefits on December 31? Scottsdale Dental Arts founder Dr. Jason McCargar, DMD, answered the most common questions his Scottsdale, Arizona practice hears at this time of year.

Q: Do unused dental benefits carry over?
"It depends on the plan, but many dental plans run on a calendar year, and unused benefits typically do not roll over," Dr. McCargar said. "Patients should confirm their own terms with their insurer."

Q: What should patients do before the year ends?
"Review what you have left, and make time for any recommended care," he said. "That could be a routine cleaning and exam, or a filling or crown you've been putting off. Appointment availability can also tighten in December, so earlier is easier."

Q: How can patients know what they will pay?
"Before a visit, our team verifies benefits and provides an estimate of expected out-of-pocket costs," Dr. McCargar said. "Coverage varies by plan, so we want people to hear the numbers before treatment, not after."

Q: Which insurance plans does the practice accept?
Scottsdale Dental Arts is in-network with Aetna, Cigna, Delta Dental, DenteMax, Guardian, MetLife and Physicians Mutual PPO plans.

Q: What if a patient has no insurance?
"You don't need insurance to receive quality care," he said. Third-party financing is available through CareCredit and Cherry, which allow payments to be spread over time. Terms depend on the plan selected, and financing can be used for restorative care as well as elective services such as Invisalign and cosmetic dentistry.

Q: Does insurance cover cosmetic treatment?
"Most plans do not cover elective cosmetic procedures," Dr. McCargar noted, "though some treatment may be partially covered when it also addresses function or oral health."
