Texas: Governor Abbott, Speaker Burrows, Lt. Governor Patrick Demand Greater Prosecutorial Accountability

~ In response to concerns over the actions of certain local prosecutors in Texas, Governor Greg Abbott, Speaker of the Texas House Dustin Burrows, and Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick have joined forces to bring greater transparency and accountability to these rogue officials.

The state leaders are prioritizing efforts to strengthen public safety and keep criminals off the streets, following a clear pattern of certain local prosecutors releasing repeat offenders back into the community. This has put innocent Texans at risk and has raised serious concerns about the safety of the public.

Governor Abbott emphasized that Texans must come first and that prosecutors have a responsibility to enforce Texas law and keep violent criminals behind bars. He expressed concern over cases where murder charges have been dropped and repeat offenders have been released, resulting in innocent Texans paying the price. The governor made it clear that Texas will hold rogue prosecutors accountable for their actions and ensure justice for victims.

Speaker Burrows echoed these sentiments, stating that for too long, Texans have been at the mercy of certain local prosecutors' soft-on-crime policies. He highlighted the creation of the House Governmental Oversight Select Committee in March, which will meet on September 30th to hear testimony on this issue and develop reforms that prioritize public safety, hold public officials accountable, and ensure that political ideology does not take precedence over law and order. Speaker Burrows also stated that this will be a top priority for the Texas House in the next session.

Lt. Gov. Patrick also weighed in on the issue, stating that liberal, soft-on-crime prosecutors have endangered Texans for far too long. He pledged strong action from the Texas Senate against these rogue prosecutors who release violent criminals back onto the streets. Lt. Gov. Patrick expressed his commitment to working with Speaker Burrows and Governor Abbott to hold these prosecutors accountable for their actions.

The state leaders' call for greater accountability comes as concerns grow over reckless prosecutorial decisions in some regions of Texas that put innocent Texans at risk. In Travis County alone, District Attorney José Garza's office has dismissed murder charges, refused to prosecute violent criminals, or granted bond in numerous cases involving repeat offenders.

Some of these cases include Peter Perius, who was charged with murder in 2022 but had the charges dismissed in 2024. He was also sentenced to 10 years in prison for tampering with evidence involving a human corpse. Roy Garcia was charged with murder in 2022 but had the charges dismissed in 2023. He also has a previous murder conviction from Bexar County and served a 10-year sentence.

Christian Alba was charged with aggravated robbery in 2023 but was convicted of a lesser charge and received probation and community service. He also has multiple other charges, including stealing ammunition and murder, which were either dismissed or resulted in no charges being filed.

Quinton Peterson has a long list of charges dating back to 2022, including assault on a peace officer and unlawful carry of a weapon. Many of these charges were either rejected or dismissed, and he was eventually sentenced to prison for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Thomas Vences has an extensive criminal record with over 34 cases in Travis County alone. Despite being charged with burglary of habitation twice, he was released on bond and is currently facing an indictment for capital murder of a peace officer.

The state leaders are determined to address these concerning patterns and hold rogue prosecutors accountable for their actions. They are committed to ensuring that public safety remains the top priority and that justice is served for victims and their families.
