Texas: Governor Abbott, HHSC Announce SNAP Replacement Benefits Extension For Texans Affected By Flooding

~ In a recent announcement, Governor Greg Abbott revealed that the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) has been granted federal approval to extend the deadline for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients to apply for replacement benefits. This extension comes in response to the severe weather and flooding that occurred in July, which caused many families to lose or destroy their food supplies.

The new deadline for SNAP recipients to apply for replacement benefits is now August 12, 2026. This gives affected Texans in Central and South Texas an additional opportunity to access essential food support as they work towards recovering and rebuilding from the recent natural disasters.

Governor Abbott expressed his commitment to providing all available resources to help families affected by the severe weather and flooding. He stated, "Through this expansion of SNAP replacement benefits, we will ensure that affected Texans across Central and South Texas have access to the essential food support they need to recover and rebuild."

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food and Nutrition Service has also approved HHSC's request to add two more counties - Sutton and Zavala - to the list of areas eligible for SNAP replacement benefits. These counties join nine others that were previously approved: Bandera, Blanco, Frio, Gillespie, Kendall, Kerr, Medina, Uvalde, and Val Verde counties.

HHS Executive Commissioner Stephanie Muth expressed gratitude towards federal partners for their collaboration in making these replacement benefits available to more Texans impacted by the July flooding. SNAP recipients can request a benefit replacement by visiting a local HHSC office or downloading form H1855 and mailing it or faxing it in. For those who are unable to visit a local office due to age, disability or distance can also request a benefit replacement through these methods.

Texans impacted by any disaster can also visit the HHSC Receiving Disaster Assistance webpage for more information. Additionally, they can dial 2-1-1 and select option 1 to find local resources such as food or shelter. The state is committed to providing support and assistance to those in need during these challenging times.
