Texas: Governor Abbott Appoints Five To Council On Cardiovascular Disease And Stroke

~ Governor Greg Abbott has recently made appointments and reappointments to the Council on Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke, a group charged with developing a plan to reduce the impact of these health issues in Texas. The appointments include Christine Cox, Brittany Henson, Remedios "Remmy" Perez Morris, Jennifer Scott, and Lauri Speirs.
Christine Cox, a resident of Aurora, has been appointed to the council. She is a nurse practitioner and currently serves as the director of Extended Care services at Front Line Mobile Health. Cox also holds positions as a board director for the North Central Texas Organization for Nursing Leadership and as a member of the health and wellness committee for the Texas Commission on Fire Protection. She is an active member of various professional organizations such as the American Association of Nurses, American Association of Nurse Practitioners, Oncology Nursing Society, American Nephrology Nurses Association, and National Fire Protection Association. In addition to her professional commitments, Cox is also involved in her community as a parishioner at Saint Elizabeth Anne Seton Catholic Church and volunteers as a nurse practitioner at Mercy Clinic. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Texas Tech University Health Science Center and a Master of Science in Nursing from Texas Woman's University.

Brittany Henson from Hemphill has also been appointed to the council by Governor Abbott. Henson currently works as a senior program consultant at the American Heart Association (AHA) and is also a registered nurse at Sabine County Hospital. She holds multiple degrees including a Bachelor of Science in Health and Biology, Master of Education in Health from Sam Houston State University, and Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Texas (UT) at Arlington.
Remedios "Remmy" Perez Morris has been reappointed to the council by Governor Abbott. Morris is retired but previously served as a member of the Governor's EMS Trauma Advisory Stroke Committee. She holds an Associate of Arts in Journalism and Public Relations from Austin Community College and has also attended Texas State University. In 2006, she graduated from Leadership Round Rock.
Jennifer Scott, a resident of Fort Worth, has been appointed to the council by Governor Abbott. She currently serves as the system program director for the Heart and Vascular Service Line at Texas Health Resources. Scott is a member of various professional organizations including the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation, Texas Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation, and American Nurses Association. She is also actively involved in community service as an executive committee member for the AHA – Tarrant County Heart Walk and as a volunteer teacher for Hands Only CPR for the American Heart Association. Scott holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from UT Arlington and a Master of Business Administration from Western Governors University. She is also an Advanced-Board Certified Nurse Executive.

Lauri Speirs, a resident of Kennedale, has been appointed to the council by Governor Abbott. Speirs currently works as the stroke program clinical nurse specialist at JPS Health Network. She is a member of various professional organizations including the AHA, American Association of Neuroscience Nurses, and American Association of Critical Care Nurses. In addition to her professional commitments, Speirs also volunteers with the Travis County Food Bank. She holds an Associate Degree in Nursing from Odessa College, Bachelor of Science in Nursing from University of Phoenix, and Master of Science in Nursing from Grand Canyon University.
These appointments will serve on the Council on Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke until February 1st, 2031 for Cox, Henson, Morris; and until February 1st, 2027 for Scott and Speirs. With their diverse backgrounds and expertise in healthcare, these individuals are well-equipped to help develop an effective plan to reduce cardiovascular disease and stroke in Texas.
