Texas: Governor Abbott Announces NRG Energy Expansion In Houston
Rezul News/10727820
~ In a recent announcement, Governor Greg Abbott revealed that NRG Energy, Inc. (NRG) will be constructing a new electric power generation plant at their existing Greens Bayou facility in Harris County. This project has been designated as a qualified project under the Texas Jobs, Energy, Technology, and Innovation (JETI) program.
The new plant will have a capacity of 455-megawatts and represents a capital investment of $617 million. Governor Abbott expressed his excitement about this investment, stating that it will add more power to Texas' energy infrastructure and help meet the energy needs of homes and businesses in the fifth-largest metropolitan area in the nation.
This project was made possible through a Texas Energy Fund loan agreement between NRG and the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUC), which was announced in November 2025. The plant is expected to begin generating power for the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) power region in 2028.

NRG President Robert Gaudette also shared his enthusiasm for this project, stating that it is part of Governor Abbott's innovative JETI program. He believes that this new facility will not only enhance grid stability but also create job opportunities and make power more affordable for homes and businesses in Texas. Gaudette expressed his gratitude towards all parties involved, including Governor Abbott, the Texas Legislature, PUC, and the Galena Park Independent School District (ISD).
Speaking on behalf of Galena Park ISD, Superintendent of Schools John Moore also recognized the potential impact of NRG's investment in this project. He believes that it will not only support local economic development but also ensure long-term stability for public education.
This latest development is just one example of NRG's commitment to investing in Texas' energy future. With this new plant at Greens Bayou, they are poised to continue leading as America's energy leader.
