Texas: Governor Abbott Announces Federal Disaster Declaration Approval for Summer Severe Weather and Flooding

~ Governor Greg Abbott announced today that President Donald J. Trump has approved federal disaster assistance for communities across Texas that were impacted by severe weather and flooding in July. The approval comes as part of a Major Disaster Declaration, which will provide much-needed resources to help affected areas recover and rebuild.

In a statement, Governor Abbott expressed his gratitude for President Trump's approval of the Major Disaster Declaration. "I thank President Trump for his swift action in approving this declaration," said Governor Abbott. "With federal public assistance now available in 19 counties, local officials will have the necessary resources to begin the recovery process. Texas is committed to providing every available resource to support our affected communities."

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has approved its Public Assistance program for 19 counties: Bandera, Crockett, Dimmit, Edwards, Frio, Gillespie, Kendall, Kerr, Kimble, Kinney, La Salle, Mason, Maverick, Menard, Real, Sutton, Uvalde, Val Verde and Zavala County. This program includes assistance for emergency work and the repair or replacement of disaster-damaged facilities. The Governor's request for Public Assistance in nine additional counties is still pending.

The Governor has also requested FEMA's Individual Assistance program for 30 affected counties. This program provides funding for expenses such as temporary housing, emergency home repairs and uninsured or underinsured personal property losses. It also covers disaster legal services and unemployment assistance for those impacted by the disaster. A request from Texas to authorize additional FEMA Hazard Mitigation Grant Program resources statewide is also pending.

Officials are currently reviewing damage information self-reported by Texans through TDEM's Individual State of Texas Assessment Tool (iSTAT) damage survey. Those who have been impacted by the July storms and flooding are encouraged to submit information about damage to their homes or businesses by visiting damage.tdem.texas.gov. This information is crucial in helping officials identify affected areas and connect Texans with necessary resources.

Governor Abbott has been actively taking steps to provide support to communities impacted by the severe weather and flooding in July. This includes extending SNAP replacement benefits for affected Texans, amending the state's disaster declaration to include additional counties, providing updates on the state's emergency response in Cotulla and Uvalde, and issuing a state disaster declaration. The Texas State Emergency Operations Center (SOC) has also been elevated to 24-hour operations at Level II (Escalated Response) and additional state emergency response resources have been deployed ahead of the severe weather and flash flooding threat.
