Texas: Governor Abbott Activates Additional State Wildfire Response Resources Ahead Of Critical Fire Danger

~ In response to the potential threat of wildfires in Texas this week, Governor Abbott has directed the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) to activate additional state resources. The governor made this announcement today, stating that the state is prepared to deploy all necessary resources to prevent any wildfire threats.

"Texas stands ready to deploy all necessary resources to thwart any wildfire threats in our state," said Governor Abbott. He also urged Texans to create an emergency plan, follow the guidance of state and local officials, and avoid activities that could potentially cause a spark.

According to the National Weather Service, parts of South Texas are expected to experience elevated fire weather conditions today, while the Panhandle will see similar conditions tomorrow. This is due to dry fuels, strong winds, and above-average temperatures. The weather pattern is setting up for critical fire weather conditions across several regions midweek, particularly on Tuesday. Wind gusts, daytime heating, and low relative humidity are expected to significantly increase the risk of wildfires. These dangerous conditions are expected to last through at least the later half of the week.

At the direction of Governor Abbott, several state wildfire response resources are available to support local operations. This includes over 250 firefighters and support personnel from both in-state and out-of-state agencies, as well as more than 75 pieces of heavy equipment such as bulldozers and motor graders. Additionally, there are over 25 federally contracted firefighting aircraft on standby including large air tankers, single-engine air tankers for retardant drops, super scoopers for water drops, air attack platforms for surveillance and spotting, and an aerial supervision module for aerial guidance.

The Texas Department of State Health Services has also mobilized Wildland Fire and Severe Weather Support Packages consisting of medics, ambulances, and all-terrain vehicles. The Texas National Guard has Blackhawk and Chinook helicopters with firefighting capabilities ready for deployment. Other agencies such as the Texas Department of Transportation, Texas Department of Public Safety, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, and the Public Utility Commission of Texas are also actively monitoring the situation and providing support.
