Tacoma City Council Funds Pilot with St. Leo Food Connection to Expand Food Access at Tacoma Public Library

~ In a unanimous decision, the Tacoma City Council has voted to adopt Resolution 41977, which will allocate $15,000 in Council contingency funds to support a pilot partnership between St. Leo Food Connection and Tacoma Public Library. The resolution was sponsored by District 2 Council Member Sarah Rumbaugh and co-sponsored by District 1 Council Member John Hines and District 3 Council Member Jamika Scott.

Council Member Rumbaugh expressed her motivation for this resolution, stating that she recognized the increasing need for accessible food resources for children and families. She made it her priority this year to expand food access for children in places where they feel safe and spend time. She also expressed her gratitude towards St. Leo Food Connection and Tacoma Public Library for their collaboration in creating this partnership.

As a result of this collaboration, St. Leo Food Connection has launched a pilot program with Tacoma Public Library that includes serving Summer Meals at the Main Library, providing healthy snacks at three additional libraries, and exploring the possibility of a pop-up pantry at the Main Library to increase access to nutritious food for children and families.

Library Director Amita Lonial expressed her gratitude towards the City of Tacoma for their support in continuing this partnership with St. Leo Food Connection. She stated that by providing nutritious food in places where people already gather, this partnership is not only combating hunger but also strengthening the community.

St. Leo Food Connection Director Dawn Whitman also expressed her gratitude towards the City of Tacoma and Tacoma Public Library for recognizing the importance of providing food to children and families in spaces where they already gather. She stated that their support for this new effort to expand food access into these spaces is greatly appreciated.

The allocated funds will be used to purchase food and snacks for distribution through the library-based programs, expanding access to food for children and families while evaluating the effectiveness of this community-based service model.

Council Member Hines, who is also a teacher, shared his personal experience with the negative consequences of hunger on children. He stated that hunger can hinder a child's potential by affecting their ability to focus in the classroom and their physical development. He believes that supporting the St. Leo Food Connection pilot program is an important step for the children of Tacoma and will set them up for success in the future.
