Spokane: Significant Impacts to North-South Travel

~ Spokane, WA - Starting Monday, June 8, two major construction projects will significantly impact north and southbound motorist travel in the city. The Maple Street Bridge will be closed in both directions from June 11 to June 25, while the Greene Street Bridge will undergo deck resurfacing starting on the same day.

According to Kirstin Davis, Communications Manager for the City of Spokane, drivers are advised to plan ahead and allow for extra time when traveling through these areas. They are also reminded to slow down for everyone's safety and support local businesses that may be impacted by the necessary projects.

The Maple-Walnut Grind and Overlay project, which aims to resurface Maple Street and Walnut Street between 4th Avenue and the bridge, was originally scheduled for 2025 but was postponed due to an industry strike. The closure of the bridge during this time will ensure maximum safety for construction workers and minimize overall obstruction time.

Lane reductions on northbound Walnut Street between 4th Avenue and 2nd Avenue will begin on Monday, June 8 to prepare for the grind and overlay work. This may cause slowdowns for drivers entering downtown. Similarly, lane reductions on southbound Maple Street between the Maple Street Bridge and 4th Avenue will also begin on Monday, June 8. Drivers approaching 4th Avenue from southbound Maple Street should expect slowdowns as well.

During the bridge closure from June 11 to June 25, northbound drivers will be detoured at 4th Avenue and directed east towards Lincoln Street or Division Street. Southbound drivers will be detoured at Boone Avenue and directed east towards Monroe Street or Division Street. Drivers are urged to use alternate routes during this time.

However, access to businesses in the area will be maintained throughout the project duration. The public is reminded to make an extra effort in supporting these businesses during this challenging time.

In addition to the Maple Street Bridge closure, the City of Spokane will also be working on preserving the decks of three bridges this construction season. The first project, which begins on Monday, June 8, will focus on the Greene Street Bridge spanning across the Spokane River.

The project includes replacing deteriorating concrete and repairing or replacing deck joints. The first phase will require southbound Greene Street to be closed with a detour in place and northbound reduced to one lane of traffic. This work is expected to be completed by approximately June 26, after which northbound work will begin in July.

During this time, northbound Greene Street will be reduced to one lane between Mission Avenue and Carlisle Avenue. Drivers should expect significant slowdowns in this area. Southbound drivers will be detoured at Euclid Avenue and directed west to continue southbound. Local access on Greene Street between Carlisle Avenue and Ermina Avenue will still be maintained.
