Spokane: City Service Adjustments During Fire Response

~ As the Spokane Complex Fire continues to ravage through the community, the City of Spokane is making necessary adjustments to its services. Public Works infrastructure systems have been impacted in various ways, which will also affect City utility customers. Kirstin Davis, the Communications Manager for the city, has provided an update on what residents can expect during this difficult time.

One of the major changes is in solid waste collections. Residential curbside and commercial collections will not take place in Level 3 evacuation zones for safety reasons. However, once these areas are downgraded and residents are able to return, they can put out extra bags of garbage on their normal collection days free of charge. This also applies to customers who subscribe to food and yard waste collection services; they are advised to remove spoiled food from packaging before placing it in their green cart.

For those whose collection carts have been damaged by the fire, replacements will be provided at no cost. Residents can report damaged carts by submitting a Start or Change Request at Spokane311.org and indicating that it was due to the fire. On the other hand, solid waste collections in Level 2 and Level 1 evacuation areas will continue as scheduled.

The Waste to Energy Facility is operating as usual despite the ongoing crisis. However, water service has been turned off for some properties in heavily impacted areas due to running water during initial response efforts. As a result, residents returning to their homes may find that their water service has been shut off. To restore water service, they are advised to contact Spokane 311 either by phone or online.

Despite damage and obstacles caused by the wildfires, the City's water system has maintained fire response levels and pressure zones while still distributing water to households. Crews are actively assessing the system and properties in heavily impacted areas to ensure efficiency and test water quality.

Utility bills will continue to be sent out as usual during this time; however, those living in fire-impacted properties can contact Spokane 311 to inquire about any applicable charges. For any other concerns regarding utility bills, services, or damages resulting from leaks or meter damage, residents are encouraged to reach out to Spokane 311 for assistance.

In some cases, residents may return to their homes and find water in their basements. In such situations, they can file a Claim for Damages with the City. Private water and fire damage service providers will not be allowed access to homes and properties that are still in Level 3 evacuation zones.

The Street Department has been actively assessing the impacted areas within the city and has received reports of damaged trees that may need to be removed. Residents are urged to report any compromised trees that could potentially impact the right of way to Spokane 311 so that the Urban Forestry team can take necessary action.

As the community continues to respond and recover from the impacts of the Spokane Complex Fire, the City of Spokane is working diligently to ensure that essential services are still being provided while also prioritizing safety for all residents.
