Spokane: City and County Offer Adopt-A-Drain Program

Rezul News/10747571
~ The City of Spokane and Spokane County are launching a program inviting residents, businesses and organizations to adopt storm drains and help keep them clear of debris and pollution.

Participants can sign up online, choose a nearby drain and give it a name. Organizers ask volunteers to spend 15 minutes twice a month sweeping away leaves, trash and other debris, clearing a path for water during snowmelt and reporting suspected illicit discharges. Volunteers will also be asked to track the debris they remove.

The agencies say preventing stormwater pollution helps protect the Spokane River and limits polluted groundwater reaching the Spokane Valley-Rathdrum Prairie Aquifer, the region's sole source of drinking water. The aquifer and river are interdependent, according to the announcement.

Spokane Public Works Director Marlene Feist said the program responds to community interest in learning about stormwater and finding ways to help. She said keeping drains clear of pollutants is important to protecting the river and aquifer.

Spokane County Senior Director of Public Works Kyle Twohig said the program offers residents another way to help protect drinking water, neighborhoods and rivers. He said widespread participation could help prevent pollution and ice buildup.

The program also plans to highlight participants' drain names and hold community events.
