Spark Boston Council Applications Open

~ Boston Mayor Michelle Wu has announced that applications for the 2026-2027 SPARK Boston Council are now open. The council, which is a volunteer leadership and civic engagement group for Boston residents between the ages of 20 and 35, plays a crucial role in leading city initiatives for young adults. Interested individuals can submit their applications until June 30, 2026.

According to Mayor Wu, SPARK Boston serves as a vital link between City Hall and the next generation of leaders in Boston. She believes that the council brings fresh ideas, lived experiences, and a deep commitment to strengthening communities. The mayor encourages all young adults in the city to apply and help shape the future of Boston.

Under the guidance of SPARK Boston Director Aidan McDonough, the 2026-2027 Council will be responsible for creating programming and advising city leaders on how to make Boston an inviting, connected, culturally rich, and sustainable home for all residents. Throughout their term, council members will have the opportunity to hear from key members of the Mayor's administration, leaders within City Hall, and community organizations on various topics such as climate resilience, education, housing, nightlife, and civic innovation.

Director McDonough emphasizes that Boston's strength lies in its diverse voices, experiences, and ideas from constituents in every neighborhood. He urges passionate individuals who are eager to make a difference and shape the city's future to apply for SPARK Boston. He believes that this is an opportunity for young leaders from all corners of Boston to come together, collaborate with one another and create a city that works for everyone.

Previous council members have come from diverse cultural and professional backgrounds including public service, media, higher education, and scientific research. The council meets on the first Monday of each month and members are encouraged to attend at least one community meeting and one SPARK event or subcommittee meeting per month. Applicants must reside in Boston and be willing to commit 15 hours monthly to the SPARK Boston program. The council, which has been serving young adults and the City of Boston for over 18 years, is now looking for new members to continue its legacy.

The current 2025-2026 SPARK Council will continue their work until the end of their term in August. They have already participated in several opportunities, including volunteering during the Mayor's inaugural Office Hours and the Mayor's Office of Civic Organizing's Civic Summit. They have also led and taken part in signature programming such as Neighborhood Socials, Chief Chats, and panel events in collaboration with local organizations.

He sees this work as leaving a legacy for future generations and inspiring them to make an impact in their communities. Xaltipa encourages young Bostonians who want to make a difference while growing alongside others who care about the city to join SPARK.
