June 2, 2026 ~ South Bend Begins Annual Fire Hydrant Flushing Program

The City of South Bend has announced the start of their annual fire hydrant flushing program as part of routine maintenance on the water distribution system. This standard practice in the water industry will continue through October.

According to city officials, flushing fire hydrants serves multiple purposes. It verifies that the hydrants are functioning properly in case of a fire, prevents water stagnation, and helps prevent discolored water events from occurring.

This week, strategic flushing will take place in a specific area bordered by Eddy Street to the west, Jefferson Boulevard to the north, Logan Street to the east, and the St. Joseph River to the south.

Residents are advised to be aware of some temporary changes during this process. Tap water may appear red, brown, or blackish in color. If this occurs, running three cold-water faucets at full stream until the water runs clear again should resolve the issue. It is also recommended to check clothes washers and icemakers for any sediment before using them.

In case faucets seem clogged or running slowly, residents are advised to remove screens and rinse them out. Additionally, there may be fluctuations in water pressure during this time; however, it is only temporary and regular pressure will resume once the flushing period is complete.

It should be noted that not all fire hydrants in South Bend are flushed every year due to their large number and size of the city's water distribution system. However, all fire hydrants at the end of water mains are flushed annually.

The City of South Bend assures residents that this annual program is necessary for maintaining a safe and reliable water supply for all its citizens.
