Setting Colorado's Table: New Coffee Table Book Celebrates 150 Years of Agricultural Legacy

DENVER ~ In honor of America's 250th anniversary and Colorado's 150th year of statehood, the Colorado Department of Agriculture (CDA) has joined forces with History Colorado to release a new commemorative coffee table book titled "Setting Colorado's Table: 150 Years of Agricultural Legacy." This limited edition book, written by History Colorado's Head of Curatorial Services Dr. Rachael Storm, delves into the state's rich agricultural history through five core themes: Water, Land, Life, Resilience, and Celebration. The cover features a reproduction of a 35-foot mural created by local artist Thomas "Detour" Evans that was first displayed at the National Western Stock Show earlier this year.

Governor Jared Polis expressed his pride in Colorado's agricultural producers and their hard work in providing the nation with top-quality fruits, vegetables, salsas, breads, and meats. He also emphasized the importance of recognizing the people behind the food and their role as stewards of the land. He hopes that Coloradans will take this opportunity to learn more about their state's proud agricultural history through this unique book.

To further support and protect Colorado's soils, $30 from each book sold will go directly to farmers and ranchers through the Colorado Soil Health Program. This program provides financial and technical assistance to producers who are implementing soil health practices on their land.

Commissioner of Agriculture Kate Greenberg sees this book as a bridge between the past and future of agriculture in Colorado. She believes it honors the resilience and innovation of those who have been farming and ranching on this land for generations. In addition to celebrating their contributions, a portion of the proceeds from each book sale will go back to these producers enrolled in the Soil Health Program.

"Setting Colorado's Table" not only offers a narrative history but also includes personal stories and essays that provide insight into the diverse experiences of those who have shaped agriculture in the state. Author Dr. Rachael Storm acknowledges the changes in technology and economics, but emphasizes that at the heart of it all are the families who continue to dedicate themselves to farming and ranching, taking risks to feed their communities.

Former USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack praises the book as a testament to Colorado's farmers, ranchers, and producers over the past 150 years. He believes it accurately portrays their values of hard work, sacrifice, and commitment that remain prevalent in today's agricultural industry.

As part of this project, History Colorado collected over two dozen oral histories from individuals across the state who have played a role in shaping Colorado's agricultural heritage. Dr. Storm will also be traveling to various locations throughout the state to speak about the book.

"Setting Colorado's Table" is now available for purchase through History Colorado's online store and at their physical location, with plans for wider distribution later this summer. Limited edition prints of CDA's ag mural by Detour are also available for purchase through History Colorado.
