Residents of Carolina Arbors Volunteer at Spring Valley Elementary School
Rezul News/10487396
DURHAM, N.C. - Rezul -- Del Webb, the nation's leading builder of active adult communities for those 55 and older, is pleased to announce that volunteerism amongst residents of Carolina Arbors at Durham's Spring Valley Elementary School has been consistently strong since the community's inception.
"Carolina Arbors has an admirably strong Elementary School Volunteering Club, with over 50 active club members," said David Carrier, president of PulteGroup's Raleigh division. "The club has volunteered at Spring Valley Elementary School in a variety of ways, from tutoring assistance to fundraising and more. I can speak for Del Webb as a company in saying that we are proud to have such a commendable group of residents."
Approximately one third of the club members are former teachers. Prior to the COVID-19 environment, volunteers regularly assisted Spring Valley Elementary School students via one-to-one and small group reading and math tutorial sessions, as well as the set up and ongoing maintenance of a school garden. They also provided help in the library and assistance at campus events, such as the school's annual book fair, carnival, and picture day. The Durham School Board of Education honored the Elementary School Volunteering Club with a recognition plaque in 2017; the plaque was in appreciation of the time and resources donated to Spring Valley Elementary by Carolina Arbors' residents. Furthermore, Carolina Arbors residents donated over $4,000 for the Spring Valley Elementary School library in 2019, covering the library's financial needs at that time.

During COVID-19, no in-person volunteering has taken place. However, a proposal made by the club to offer online tutoring has been accepted, with planning currently underway on best practices to fulfill this assignment. Also, during COVID-19, the club provided information to the school about a food drive sponsored by the Carolina Arbors' Community Outreach Club to enable access to donated food to student families.
"Establishing the elementary school volunteer group and watching it grow over the last five years has been incredibly gratifying," said club leader Robert Fogel. "This growth included expanding from 21 to 51 volunteers, with many volunteers returning for multiple years. Also, several assumed increasing responsibility in the classroom. To quote one volunteer who speaks for many, 'The teachers are so appreciative. I hope everyone volunteering will get the same kind of joy out of it as I have.'"
Located in Durham off Leesville Road, in close proximity to the intersection of Highway 70 and I-540, PulteGroup's Del Webb began construction on Carolina Arbors' 1,292 homes in 2013. Sales at the community were complete in early 2020, with homeowners consisting of active adults aged 55 and older.
