PUBLIC NOTICE: Maryland Department of Agriculture to Treat Region of Dorchester County for Mosquitos through Aerial Spraying on September 1

ANNAPOLIS, MD (September 1, 2026) ~ On September 1, 2026, the Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA) announced that they will be conducting aerial spraying in a targeted area of Dorchester County to reduce the adult mosquito population. The treatment is scheduled to take place on the evening of Monday, September 1, weather permitting.
According to MDA, the aerial spraying will cover approximately 16,938 acres in the following areas: Church Creek, Fishing Creek, Golden Hill, Hoopersville, Hoopers Island, Madison, Mc Keil Point, Smithville, Susquehanna, Taylors Island and Woolford. The purpose of this treatment is to decrease the number of adult mosquitoes in the region.
The spraying will be carried out by a twin-engine white plane with red and blue stripes. The aircraft's registration number is N903MD and it will be flying at a height of 300-500 feet above ground level. The plane will be using a formula called Trumpet which contains naled and will be applied at less than 1.0 fluid ounce per acre. Naled is a commonly used insecticide for mosquito control in the United States and has been deemed safe for humans, pets and livestock.

This public notice fulfills the requirements set by the Federal Aviation Administration for notifying communities before aerial spraying takes place. MDA has also provided a contact number (410-543-6626) for any questions or concerns regarding the spraying. More information can also be found on MDA's Mosquito Control Program website.
Residents in these areas are advised to take necessary precautions during the evening of September 1 while the aerial spraying takes place. MDA assures that this treatment is necessary for reducing the mosquito population and ensuring public health and safety in Dorchester County.
