NEWS RELEASE: 2026 Maryland Horse Career Program Kicks Off June 1

ANNAPOLIS, MD (May 27, 2026) ~ The Maryland Horse Foundation, in collaboration with the Maryland Horse Industry Board and University of Maryland Equine Studies, has announced the six participants selected for the 2026 Maryland Horse Career Program (MHCP). The program, which will take place from June 1-5, aims to connect emerging leaders with professionals in the horse industry.

Originally launched in 2017 as the Maryland Thoroughbred Career Program, MHCP has now been expanded to include all aspects of Maryland's horse ecosystem. This includes racing, breeding, sport and competition, recreation, veterinary and farrier services, event management, aftercare and equine-assisted services.

The highly competitive program offers a week-long immersive experience for motivated individuals from diverse backgrounds. Participants will have the opportunity to visit various equine operations and businesses across Maryland while engaging in group discussions, professional development sessions and networking opportunities with industry leaders.

According to Cricket Goodall, executive director of the Maryland Horse Foundation, MHCP provides an incredible opportunity for emerging leaders to gain firsthand knowledge about the depth and diversity of Maryland's horse industry. She also emphasizes that this program is crucial in increasing awareness about equine career pathways and addressing the industry's need for dedicated professionals.

The six participants were selected through a rigorous application and interview process led by the University of Maryland. They have demonstrated exceptional passion, professionalism and a strong commitment to pursuing careers within the horse industry. Their interests range from agricultural management to equine studies, breeding, farrier work, riding instruction, sports communications and broadcasting, event management and more.

Anne Litz, executive director of the Maryland Horse Industry Board, commends this year's applicants for their level of curiosity and passion towards the horse industry. She believes that these participants represent the future of this important agricultural sector in Maryland.

Throughout the week-long program, participants will travel together as a cohort while learning about different sectors that make up Maryland's nationally recognized horse industry. This includes exposure to racing, veterinary medicine, breeding and training operations, equine education, agribusiness, equestrian sport, event management, communications and equine welfare.

Graduates of the program will also have the opportunity to apply for the Maryland Horse Foundation's Work Experience Program. This one-time financial award supports additional training, certifications, education and career advancement opportunities.

The horse industry in Maryland contributes approximately $2.9 billion annually to the state's economy and supports over 28,000 jobs. It plays a significant role in agriculture, tourism, education, recreation and land preservation statewide.
