Naperville Police Arrest Felon on Probation Allegedly in Possession of a Handgun
Rezul News/10737094
~ Naperville, IL- On June 3, 2026, DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin and Naperville Chief of Police Jason Arres held a joint press conference to announce that Judge Joshua Dieden has granted the State's motion to detain Jamon Roberts, a Cook County convicted felon currently on probation, pre-trial. Roberts is accused of illegally possessing a firearm and appeared at First Appearance Court this morning.
According to the press release, on the evening of June 3rd, officers with the Naperville Police Department were conducting routine foot patrol in the Topgolf parking lot when they allegedly observed the handle of a firearm partially inside/underneath a crossbody bag on the driver's side floorboard of a white Volkswagen. The officers conducted surveillance on the vehicle and waited for an occupant to return. Three occupants, including Roberts and two females, returned to the vehicle and it is alleged that Roberts entered the driver's seat and was within arm's reach of the firearm. One of the officers used his squad car to pin in front of the Volkswagen and after all occupants exited the vehicle, a loaded Glock 19, 9 mm firearm was recovered from where it was previously observed.

State's Attorney Berlin expressed his commitment to keeping firearms out of the hands of those who are not legally allowed to possess them. He stated that as a convicted felon, Roberts is prohibited from owning a firearm and that it is particularly disturbing that he was allegedly in possession of a loaded weapon at a family-friendly recreation facility. Berlin also thanked Assistant State's Attorneys Robert Willis and Kelsy Kerr for their work in securing charges against Roberts.
Chief Arres echoed Berlin's sentiments and emphasized that every illegal firearm taken off the streets is one less opportunity for violence in their community. He commended his officers for their proactive efforts in patrolling the area and taking swift action when they observed a firearm. Arres also thanked State's Attorney Berlin and his team for their partnership and commitment to pursuing justice on behalf of the community.
Roberts, 29, of Richton Park, has been charged with one count of Aggravated Unlawful Possession of a Weapon – Previous Felony Conviction (Class 2 Felony), one count of Unlawful Possession of a Weapon by a Convicted Felon (Class 3 Felony) and one count of Unlawful Possession of a Weapon – No FOID or CCL (Class 4 Felony). His next court appearance is scheduled for June 30, 2026.
The press release also reminded the public that the charges against Roberts are only allegations and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The government has the burden to prove his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
This incident serves as a reminder that the authorities are committed to keeping their community safe from violent criminals and will take swift action against those who threaten public safety.
