Mesa Domestic Violence Awareness Night Oct. 15 Will Honor Survivors and Remember Victims
Rezul News/10747410
~ The City of Mesa will host Domestic Violence Awareness Night on Thursday, Oct. 15, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at The Post, 26 N. Macdonald. The event is intended to honor survivors and people who have died as a result of domestic violence.
"Domestic violence impacts families and communities across Mesa," Mayor Mark Freeman said. He said the event raises awareness, supports survivors and reinforces the city's commitment to ending abuse.
The Arizona Coalition to End Sexual and Domestic Violence reports that about 42.6% of women and 33.4% of men in Arizona experience intimate partner violence, sexual violence or stalking during their lifetimes. National figures cited in the announcement say 41% of women and 26% of men experience violence or stalking by an intimate partner. U.S. crime report data suggest about one in five homicide victims is killed by an intimate partner.

City Prosecutor Paul Hawkins said prosecuting domestic violence crimes and seeking justice for those affected are priorities for his office. He said the awareness month is a reminder that the community has a role in preventing abuse.
More than 25 agencies are expected to provide displays and information about awareness, resources and services for victims. Speakers will include Freeman, Assistant Mesa Police Chief Jeffrey Cutler and Assistant City Prosecutor Austin Brooks.
The keynote speaker is Crystal James, an Indigenous advocate, poet and survivor of domestic violence who directs the Yeha:wi Service Center at Mother Nation, a nonprofit providing social and cultural healing services for Native women.
The program will end with a candlelight vigil featuring purple candles and a performance by the Mesa Community College Vocal Jazz Ensemble. Attendees are encouraged to wear purple.
The event is hosted by the Mesa City Prosecutor's Office, Mesa Police Department and Mesa Family Advocacy Center, which coordinates resources to reduce trauma related to physical and sexual abuse. Information and resources are available at MesaAZ.gov/DVawareness.
