Know before you go: Downtown Bloomington on Championship Night

~ As the highly anticipated College Football National Championship between the Indiana Hoosiers and the Miami Hurricanes approaches, downtown Bloomington is buzzing with excitement. On Monday, January 19, students, residents, families, fans, workers, alumni and visitors will come together to watch the big game.

For those planning to head downtown or pass through the area on Monday evening, there are a few things to keep in mind. Street closures may shift as pedestrian volumes increase and E. Kirkwood Avenue may be closed to vehicle traffic. The exact timing of these closures will depend on crowd conditions.

Parking will also be restricted in certain areas. The 400-500 blocks of E. Kirkwood Avenue and the 100 blocks of N. and S. Dunn Street will have no parking allowed all day.

For those using rideshare services such as Uber or Lyft, there will be a designated pickup and drop-off location on 4th Street.

The Bloomington Police Department will have increased staffing before, during, and after the game as part of their community-centered policing approach. Officers will be present in downtown and other gathering areas to ensure safety and provide assistance if needed.

To prevent vehicles from entering closed areas, large buses and sanitation trucks will be strategically placed on roadways.

With a large crowd expected downtown for the game, it is important to plan for both crowds and cold weather. Downtown restaurants and bars are expected to be very busy so it is advised to dress warmly for single-digit temperatures.
