Juneau: Suicide Basin Outburst Underway – Evacuate Advised Tomorrow
Rezul News/10742706
August 11, 2026 ~ On August 11, 2026, a glacial outburst occurred at Suicide Basin, causing concern for residents in the surrounding area. The basin, located in Juneau, Alaska, is releasing water and flooding is expected to occur along Mendenhall Lake and River late Wednesday evening into early Thursday morning.
According to officials, residents are advised to evacuate the mapped evacuation advisory area as shown on the map provided at bit.ly/JuneauFloodReady. It is recommended that residents in this area evacuate tomorrow (Wednesday, August 12) and remain away until an "All Clear" message is communicated through CBJ Alerts and other official channels.
To assist those who need shelter during this time, an American Red Cross shelter will be available at Floyd Dryden Gymnasium located at 3800 Mendenhall Loop Road. More information on how and where to evacuate can be found at bit.ly/JuneauFloodReady.
For those with pets, the Red Cross will have limited space available for sheltering at the Floyd Dryden emergency shelter. However, Juneau Animal Rescue (JAR) also offers emergency sheltering for pets through their Safe-Keeping Program. JAR has also provided resources to help pet owners prepare for emergencies and evacuation.

To ensure a safe evacuation process, officials have provided specific evacuation routes for residents in different areas. Those living north of Division Street are advised to travel north on Riverside Drive towards Mendenhall (Back) Loop Road and out of the inundation area. Residents south of Division Street should travel south on Riverside Drive and turn left on Stephen Richards Memorial Drive towards Mendenhall Loop Road. On Rivercourt Way, residents should travel south on Riverside Drive towards Egan Drive.
Residents west of the Mendenhall River are advised to travel west on Mendenhall (Back) Loop Road towards Auke Bay while avoiding Back Loop Bridge. For those living west of Brotherhood Bridge, officials recommend traveling west on Glacier Highway towards Auke Bay.
It is important for residents to avoid going near the river or driving on flooded roads. While barriers have been put in place for protection, there is still a possibility of flooding. In the event of a flash flood, residents in the evacuation area will not have enough time to leave and should shelter in place.

Officials also warn against approaching the river during a flood warning as it can endanger both individuals and first responders and interfere with the evacuation process. For those who want to monitor the situation, live footage of the river can be viewed through various cameras at bit.ly/JuneauFloodReady.
For any non-emergency concerns or questions, residents can call the Flood Information Hotline at 907-500-0890 which is now operating 24 hours per day. In case of a life safety emergency, it is important to call 911 immediately.
