Investing in Colorado Students' Success

DENVER ~ Colorado has opened applications for nonprofit scholarship-granting organizations seeking inclusion on the state's eligibility list for a new federal scholarship tax credit, Gov. Jared Polis and the Department of Revenue announced.
Eligible donors will be able to direct up to $1,700 of their federal tax liability to qualifying organizations in participating states. The nonrefundable credit is intended to support students' access to educational opportunities, including after-school programs, tutoring and transportation.
Nonprofit organizations can apply through a form on the Department of Revenue's website. Applications are due Nov. 30 and will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Organizations whose 501(c)(3) status is awaiting IRS certification may still apply, the state said.

"Colorado donors value our future, and I'm excited that donors will now be able to give more to support the best education possible for kids in our state," Polis said. He encouraged eligible organizations to apply.
Colorado submitted an advance election form to the IRS in January to signal its intent to participate, according to the announcement. The state plans to send its list of approved organizations to the U.S. Treasury by Dec. 31, ahead of the credit's scheduled start on Jan. 1, 2027.
The announcement also cited new scholarship-granting organizations, including the Colorado Public Schools Foundation, Denver Public Schools Foundation Opportunity Fund and Learn Everywhere Fund, as potential channels for donations benefiting public school students. In October, Polis welcomed Treasury rules confirming that public school students could qualify, the state said.
