Idaho Falls City Council Confirms Director of New Finance Department

~ The Idaho Falls City Council has officially confirmed the appointment of Mark Hagedorn as the director and treasurer of the city's newly established Finance Department. This decision was made during a council meeting on Thursday, September 14, 2026.

Hagedorn expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve in this new role and to continue building upon the strong foundation laid by the finance team. He emphasized that their responsibility goes beyond simply managing the city's finances, but also includes being good stewards of public resources, providing reliable information for decision-making, and supporting departments in effectively serving the community.

The creation of the Finance Department was announced by the City Council last Thursday, followed by Hagedorn's confirmation as its director and treasurer. Hagedorn has been a part of the City of Idaho Falls since 2012, previously serving as the city treasurer and finance manager in the Municipal Services Department since 2022. He also held positions as City Controller from 2016 to 2022 and Lead Accountant from 2012 to 2016.

Prior to joining the City, Hagedorn worked as a senior auditor for a public accounting firm in Arizona. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Brigham Young University-Idaho.

Mayor Lisa Burtenshaw praised Hagedorn's experience and skills, stating that he has demonstrated his ability to take on additional responsibilities as the city's chief financial officer. She also highlighted his focus on accountability, transparency, and financial sustainability within the City.

In his new role, Hagedorn will be responsible for enhancing accounting policies and internal controls, ensuring accuracy in financial reports, managing financial risk, and providing high-level financial analysis and modeling to support decision-making within the City. With his experience and expertise, he is expected to be an asset in achieving these goals.
