Governor Polis Signs Bills into Law to Protect Coloradans' Furry Friends, Create Wild Horse License Plate, and Build a Colorado For All

GOLDEN ~ Golden, CO - In a move to support the well-being of both Coloradans and their beloved pets, Governor Jared Polis signed three new laws at the Foothills animal shelter today. The signing ceremony was attended by First Gentleman Marlon Reis and bill sponsors.
The first law signed by Governor Polis was HB26-1183, also known as the Sunset Pet Animal Care & Facilities Act. This bill, sponsored by Representative Karen McCormick, House Majority Leader Monica Duran, and Senators Lisa Cutter and Byron Pelton, aims to protect pets who are often considered members of families. Governor Polis emphasized that this law will make Colorado the best state for animals by strengthening the care they receive and providing the Department of Agriculture with necessary tools to ensure their safety.
First Gentleman Marlon Reis also expressed his gratitude for this new law, stating that it values pets and animals in Colorado and ensures they receive the best protections and care. He thanked the sponsors, advocates, and supporters for championing this work that aligns with Colorado's values of inclusivity and protection for all beings.

Governor Polis then went on to sign HB26-1306 - Wild Horse License Plate. This bill, sponsored by House Majority Leader Monica Duran, Representative Larry Don Suckla, and Senator Cathy Kipp, allows Coloradans to purchase a new license plate featuring a wild horse design. The proceeds from these license plates will go towards supporting efforts to care for Colorado's wild horses. Governor Polis praised this initiative as it not only promotes awareness about these majestic creatures but also supports conservation efforts.
The final bill signed by Governor Polis was HB26-1045 - Disabilities Housing Protections. This legislation, sponsored by Representatives Chad Clifford and Yara Zokaie, and Senators Jessie Danielson and Cathy Kipp, ensures that no one in Colorado can be denied access to housing because they have an assistance animal. Governor Polis emphasized the importance of access to affordable and suitable housing for all individuals, regardless of their needs. He also highlighted the state's efforts to break down barriers and promote more housing options for its residents.
In his closing remarks, Governor Polis reiterated his commitment to making Colorado a state that values and protects all beings, including animals.
