Governor Polis Reminds Coloradans: U.S. Supreme Court Decision Does Not Change Colorado Ballot Deadline

DENVER ~ Denver, CO - In light of the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision upholding a Mississippi law allowing certain ballots to be counted if they are received no more than five days after the election, Governor Jared Polis has reminded Coloradans that this ruling does not affect Colorado's election laws.

According to Governor Polis, "Today's Supreme Court decision does not change anything for Colorado voters. In Colorado, our law is clear: except for a few exceptions like military and overseas ballots, ballots must be received by 7:00 p.m. on Election Day to count." He also expressed his agreement with the Court's decision affirming that states have the authority to determine how to administer their own elections.

Colorado's election day is tomorrow, Tuesday, June 30th. While different states may have varying approaches to counting mailed ballots, Colorado law requires all ballots to be received by county election officials no later than 7:00 p.m. on Election Day in order to be counted. This rule also applies to Colorado voters who live outside of the United States and active military personnel who are absent from the state. Their ballots must be received by Wednesday, July 8th.

For those who have not yet returned their primary ballot, Governor Polis advised using an official county ballot drop box or voting in person at a voter service and polling center by 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 30th. Voters can visit GoVoteColorado.gov or the Colorado Secretary of State's voter services website for information on replacing lost ballots, registering to vote, and finding the nearest ballot drop box or voting location.
