Governor Newsom visits CHP Academy, highlights next generation of officers and California's public safety progress
Rezul News/10744386
~ Governor Gavin Newsom visited the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Academy in West Sacramento yesterday to meet with senior class cadets and highlight the state's investment in public safety progress. The Governor's visit comes as nearly 400 cadets are set to graduate from the academy this fall, bringing the total number of CHP cadets to graduate since Newsom took office to over 2,900.
During his visit, Governor Newsom emphasized the importance of investing in the next generation of officers who are dedicated to keeping communities safe. He stated, "Public safety starts with the people who choose to serve and these cadets are the next generation of California Highway Patrol officers. Our investment in CHP is ultimately an investment in the people protecting Californians every day."
Under Governor Newsom's leadership, CHP's role in public safety has expanded. The department has worked closely with local law enforcement to target auto theft, organized crime, illegal firearms, and other threats to communities. One example is the CHP Crime Suppression Team model, which was initially deployed in communities facing significant public safety challenges. Last year, Governor Newsom expanded this model to six regions across California.

The Governor also highlighted his administration's commitment to increasing CHP's capacity by launching a recruitment campaign in 2022 to hire 1,000 additional officers. This goal was met by 2024, allowing for a stronger presence of law enforcement statewide.
The investment in CHP is part of California's broader state-local public safety strategy that aims to add capacity to local departments and strengthen investigations while targeting individuals and networks driving crime. This approach has already shown results as every major crime category saw a decline in 2025, including homicide, robbery, property crime, motor vehicle theft, and violent crime. In fact, California's homicide rate fell to its lowest level since statewide reporting began in 1966 at just 3.5 per 100,000.
Governor Newsom's visit to the CHP Academy also included a b-roll package that can be downloaded for media use. This visit is just one of many recent announcements from the Governor's office regarding public safety. On August 31, Newsom signed legislation to strengthen California's protections for young people by banning cannabis advertising and labels that are attractive to children. He also announced appointments to the State 911 Advisory Board and signed a bill related to tax equity allocation.
As California continues to invest in officers, partnerships, technology, and enforcement strategies, Governor Newsom remains committed to keeping the state's public safety progress going.
