Governor Newsom proclaims Older Californians Month

~ SACRAMENTO - In a historic move, Governor Gavin Newsom has declared May 2026 as "Older Californians Month" in recognition of the state's nearly nine million older residents who greatly contribute to the diversity and richness of California.
With the number of Californians aged 60 or older now surpassing those under 18, Governor Newsom's proclamation highlights the importance of inclusive policies and programs that support the current and future population of older adults. These policies include strengthening healthcare and home and community-based services, advancing research on Alzheimer's and related dementias, transforming the behavioral health system, promoting climate protection and disaster readiness, and encouraging social inclusion and intergenerational engagement.
The theme for this year's Older Californians Month is "Champion Your Health," emphasizing prevention and wellness as key components of healthy aging. The state is taking a whole-of-society approach to ensure that all Californians have the ability to age well in their preferred setting. Through state and local age and disability planning, communities are being created where every individual can thrive as they age.

Governor Newsom recognizes the positive impact of California's diverse aging population, from record numbers of older adults in the workforce to retirees who volunteer their time to strengthen communities across the state. He encourages all Californians to celebrate these individuals who have contributed decades of knowledge, skills, and wisdom to our state.
In his proclamation, Governor Newsom states that "California continues its commitment to listening to people and the communities they represent" in order to inform policies that support all generations as they age. He also urges everyone to work towards a better future for Californians of every age.
This proclamation comes on the heels of other recent news from Governor Newsom's office. On May 25th, he secured federal assistance for Orange County hazmat response efforts following a hazardous materials incident. And on Memorial Day, he proclaimed May 25th as a day to remember and honor those who have sacrificed their lives in defense of our nation.
As California continues to face challenges and emergencies, Governor Newsom remains committed to protecting and supporting all Californians, including the growing population of older adults. With this proclamation, he recognizes the invaluable contributions of older Californians and encourages everyone to champion their health and well-being.
