Governor Abbott Holds Inaugural Texas Classroom Commission Meeting At Governor's Mansion

~ Governor Greg Abbott has taken a strong stance on education in Texas, declaring that the state must become the number one in educating children. In order to achieve this goal, he has established the Texas Classroom Commission and held its inaugural meeting at the Governor's Mansion.

During the meeting, Governor Abbott emphasized the Commission's mission to improve student achievement, support educators, and make Texas the top state for educating children. He stated that among the many number one rankings that Texas holds, it is time to add another - being number one in education.

Commission Chair Courtney Boswell MacDonald echoed this sentiment, expressing her honor in leading the Commission and her desire to ensure that teachers have a meaningful role in shaping education policy. As a former classroom teacher herself, MacDonald understands the impact that teachers have on over 5 million students in Texas.

Governor Abbott has charged the Commission with three key tasks: improving student proficiency in math and reading, limiting screen time in classrooms, and finding ways to attract and retain high-quality teachers. The Commission will also explore ways to better equip parents to support their children's academic progress and reduce administrative burdens for teachers.

The 22-member Commission includes educators from various backgrounds and will meet regularly to discuss these issues. They will then produce a report with legislative recommendations for the upcoming 90th Texas Legislative Session.

Leading the Commission is Courtney Boswell MacDonald of Kerrville, who brings her experience as a former teacher and current chair of the State Board for Educator Certification. Additional photos from the meeting will be made available.
