Governor Abbott Halts College Tuition Increases In Texas

~ In a move to make higher education more affordable for Texas students and families, Governor Greg Abbott has directed all public institutions of higher education in the state to freeze undergraduate tuition and fees for the upcoming academic year. This decision was announced in a letter sent by the Governor to all Texas public institutions of higher education.

According to Governor Abbott, access to affordable and high-quality education is crucial for Texans to acquire the necessary skills for securing well-paying jobs and meeting the demands of a growing workforce. As such, he has directed that tuition and fees remain frozen through the 2026-27 academic year for both two-year and four-year institutions, including general academic and health-related institutions.

This is not the first time Governor Abbott has taken action to freeze tuition and fees in Texas. Since 2023, he has consistently directed public institutions of higher education to freeze these costs. Additionally, during the recent legislative session, the State of Texas made record investments in higher education and increased student financial aid funding by $328 million. This will improve access to state financial aid programs for eligible students across Texas.
