Governor Abbott Appoints University Student Regents, Representative To Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board

~ Governor Greg Abbott has recently announced the appointment of seven student regents to their respective universities, effective June 1, 2026. These appointments are set to expire on May 31, 2027. In addition, the Governor has also appointed a student representative to serve on the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) for a term that will also end on May 31, 2027.
Among the newly appointed student regents is Lisa Cantu from Mission, who received her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Master of Public Service and Administration from Texas A&M University (TAMU). She is currently pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy in Education Administration from TAMU and is completing her tenure as student representative on the THECB.
Joseph Carter from Houston has been appointed as the student regent for Texas Southern University. He is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the university.
Elizabeth Diaz Arreola from Dayton has been appointed as the student regent for Lamar University within the Texas State University System. She is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science.
Rachel McLelland from Lubbock has been appointed as the student regent for Texas Tech University System. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology and Bachelor of Science in General Studies from Texas Tech University (TTU) and is now pursuing a Doctor of Medicine from TTU Health Sciences Center.

Jenna Crocker from Decatur has been appointed as the student regent for Texas Woman's University (TWU). She received her Bachelor of Science in Child Development from TWU and is now pursuing a Master of Education in School Counseling.
Ronald Makumbi from Fort Worth has been appointed as the student regent for the University of North Texas System. He received his Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Texas at Arlington and is currently pursuing a Doctor of Pharmacy at the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth.
Jeremiah Clarke from San Antonio has been appointed as the student regent for the University of Texas System. He is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations and Global Studies from UT Austin.
Lastly, Eli Heath from Lubbock has been appointed as the student representative for the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. He is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from TTU and is completing his tenure as student regent of the TTU System.
These appointments showcase the Governor's commitment to involving students in higher education decision-making processes.
