PENSACOLA, Fla. ~ Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced temporary shelter trailers for families displaced by Hurricane Isaias and one-time grants for first responders affected by the storm in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties.

At a press conference in Pensacola, DeSantis said the first two trailers had been awarded to storm-impacted families. The program is run through a partnership between nonprofit Emergency RV and the Florida Division of Emergency Management. It has received nearly 300 applications, according to the state. Eligible residents can apply at EmergencyRV.org.

The state also announced $5,000 grants for eight first responders whose homes were damaged while they continued serving their communities. The assistance is being provided through the Florida Disaster Fund and Volunteer Florida, in coordination with the Florida Sheriffs Association.

DeSantis said the grants were intended to support responders as they recover and recognize their service. He said the trailer program would provide displaced residents with a safe place to live while they rebuild.

Florida has requested a federal Major Disaster Declaration that would provide Public Assistance for 15 counties and Individual Assistance for eligible residents in eight counties. The state is awaiting a federal decision. If approved, the declaration would make additional recovery assistance available to eligible communities and residents.

Recovery teams remain in the field assessing damage and gathering information about community needs, the state said.
